SWIMMING
The swimming event is a free-style race in which pentathletes are seeded into heats. The distance and optimum time depend on the division. From an optimal score of 1,000 points, four points is added or subtracted for each .33 second above or below the optimal time for that division.
Here are the required distances and optimum times for the Junior and Youth divisions:
Swimming (Boys)
Divisions Meters 1,000 Points Points +/- Youth E 50m 40 sec. .33 sec = 4P Youth D 50m 40 sec. .33 sec = 4P Youth C 100m 1 min. 14 sec. .33 sec = 4P Youth B 200m 2 min. 30 sec. .33 sec = 4P Youth A 200m 2 min. 30 sec. .33 sec = 4P Juniors 200m 2 min. 30 sec. .33 sec = 4P
Swimming (Girls)
Divisions Meters 1,000 Points _ Points +/- Youth E 50m 40 sec. .33 sec = 4P Youth D 50m 40 sec. .33 sec = 4P Youth C 100m 1 min. 20 sec. .33 sec = 4P Youth B 200m 2 min. 40 sec. .33 sec = 4P Youth A 200m 2 min. 40 sec. .33 sec = 4P Juniors 200m 2 min. 40 sec. .33 sec = 4P
Swimming Training Plan
Here is an outline for swimming training in first year of athlete's pentathlon life developed by Janusz Peciak, Barry Matchett and Elaine Cheris.
Program One
This program is designed for athletes over age 13 who have a swimming background. (This regimen is not suitable for those under 14, unless they have shown strong willingness to work in the past.)
Months 1-6: Swim three to five times a week (as directed by coach).
Competition: There should a four sport competition at the end of Month 6, with parents invited. Lots of analysis and feedback will be necessary to detect flaws in training and to determine where training needs to be focused in the next six-month period.
Months 7-12: Swim training as directed by coach.
Program Two
If athlete comes from a non-swimming background, and they are over the age of 13, they should follow the following program.
Sport priority list: 1) Swim 2) Fence 3) Shoot and Weight Lift 4) Run 5) Ride
Months 1-6: Swim five times a week, or more if possible. (Emphasis is on stroke mastery and development of sport specific strength.)
Competition: Same as above program with closer attention paid to the swimming.
Months 7-12: Swim five to eight times a week.
