A World Cup in Our Own Back Yards!
The UIPM has awarded the United States its first World Cup since 1999! And it’s up close and personal!
The local organizing committee (otherwise known as the LOC) looks suspiciously like West Coast Pentathlon. It’s composed of WCP President Pat Duffy, WCP Chairman Mike Duffy, and WCP Secretary Connie Ballard. Michael Cintas of Equestrian Centers International (ECI) completes the LOC team, and WCP board member Vic Reizman will be the Swim Director. The documents were signed at a live press conference in Rancho Mirage on July 7.
But wait; there really is more. We have been awarded the World Cup for four years—including 2012, the Olympic qualifier year. The competition will be held in Rancho Mirage. Mark your calendars for February 24-27, 2011.
Welcome to West Coast Pentathlon
If you are a pentathlete—or interested in becoming a pentathlete—you’re in the right place.
Despite our name, we have members all over the country as well as in England. We’re one of the few active modern pentathlon groups in the United States and our president stays in close contact with pentathlon organizers throughout the world.
We are a serious group—with serious goals. But we welcome beginners and will work with you to help you achieve your personal goals.
Poke around the Web site. The best place to begin is our newsletter that details all our activities. Then take a look at the competition link. Our club is hosting two qualifiers this winter and some of our members will probably go to World Championships this year. We’re fun—but we’re serious.
If you have any questions, please e-mail us. We love to hear from you.
Some background on our group
We know you probably have a lot of questions about us, so here’s a quick overview:
Who? We are a youth organization of pentathletes, ages 5 to 26.
What? Modern pentathlon is a demanding Olympic sport made up of five disciplines (running, swimming, shooting, fencing and jumping horseback) competed in four events (swim, fence, show jumping, and run/shoot).
Where? We’re based in Northern California but have members all over the country. And we compete and train all over the world.
When? Our pentathletes compete regularly, attend specialized camps at least twice a year, and train nearly every day. There is no "off-season" in pentathlon.
Why? Good question! Pentathlon is a sport for mature athletes who are self-disciplined, welcome challenge, enjoy competition, and are eager to excel. It’s perfect for all-round athletic types who may not be superstars in one particular sport, but want to enjoy national and international competition.
